  • Gong Xi Fa Cai!

    Dear Kristen,

It's the Chinese New Year again! This year is the year of the Ox... or rather... Cow.

This year I decided to do away with the traditional chinese cheongsam for you as you hated it last year. I think the materials for cheongsam tend to be stiff and stuffy... So, I just got for you lots of comfy dresses which I knew you would love to wear.

Here you are singing the Gong Xi Gong Xi song for everyone to hear. You know what, we didn't know that you knew this song already and we're guessing that you even know the lyrics although we can't quite catch it, as we don't know the lyrics ourselves. But you surprised us by singing it!!! You must have learnt this in school... Clever girl! Okay, you sang it pretty low and quietly, so must listen hard!

And yes, the all important part of Chinese New Year... How to say Gong Xi Gong Xi... and how to ask for Ang pow!

All in all... this year you were pretty well behaved during Chinese New Year.

Chinese New Year Eve - At the reunion dinner, you fell asleep while eating because you did not sleep the whole day. So we put you on the couch but left quickly after dinner because the lights of the living room were switched off because we wanted you to sleep in the dark. Without wanting to inconvenience everyone, we quickly left so that you could sleep comfortably at home. Mummy and Daddy spent the night watching TV and surfing the internet. Funniest part was we didn't even realise it was past 12 till a few minutes later.

Chinese New Year, Day 1 - After sleeping at around 8plus the night before, you woke up at about 4.50am!!! You were very cooperative most of the day, but by lunch time you were so tired you fell asleep in the car. Ended up taking your nap at Lau Kim's place and had an extremely late lunch after that. Fortunately, you fell asleep at the usual 10 plus timing. You gradually warmed up to everyone... But only when there's not many people around.

Chinese New Year, Day 2 - We spent the morning lazing around the house and went to the playground with you where you went up and down the slides... too many times. You warmed up a little more this time and allowed other people to bring you around. Good girl. Mummy is very pleased. I think... I need to socialise you more.

  • Singing - Jesus Loves the Little Children

    Dear Kristen,

You love to sing. When you're at ease... or when you think no one is watching... When your favourite songs are playing on the radio... You sing.

I finally managed to get a recording of you singing with the song. I think you cooperated partly because you wanted to see a video of yourself singing too. We had to restart the song on the radio because the first time around, Uncle Kelvin was talking in the car because he didn't know we were recording. So this was the second take.

And why are you not in your car seat? Because the carseat was in Daddy's car. This is Grandpa's car.

  • Dear Kristen,

Earlier tonight, Mummy was showing Daddy a couple of dresses that she was thinking of letting you wear for a wedding that we're attending this Saturday.

One was a dress that Mummy bought for you from Pumpkin Patch and one was this pretty long-sleeved dress from Uncle Berd & his girlfriend Wan Ting.

You walked over and said "I want this one". Yes, a vote of confidence for Uncle Berd's taste in dresses.

After taking your bath, while we were trying to get you in your PJs, you started kicking a fuss suddenly just as we were about to put on the PJs... You starting screaming and wailing that you "want that one"... At first I thought it was your school uniform as I was busy arranging your backpack for school tomorrow. Then I realised that it was the dress you wanted.

Thinking that you just wanted to try it on, Mummy let you wear it. You happily hugged and gave me a kiss for letting you wear it. You started parading around in your dress, letting the dress flow around you... THEN... you decided you wanted to sleep in it. You crawled happily under the bedcovers and started getting comfortable. Daddy said to let you be... and... NOW... you are fast asleep in a fancy dress tonight.

  • 4th & 5th Day at School

    Dear Kristen,

The 4th and 5th day of school are non-events. Meaning, it went by smoothly without a hitch.

You lasted well through out the 3 hour school day and even sat on the bus yourself. What a good girl! On the 4th day, Mummy was on morning leave only as Auntie Belle was back already.

I peeped at you from afar and watched you as you had your snack with the rest of your classmates. Cheeky little you, refused to stay in your seat. Auntie Julia (the Principal) had to hold your hand and feed you! Oh man...

When I asked you about the incident back at home, you simply gave a cheeky smile!

    *Faint*

    Love you loads,
    Mummy

  • Photos of Your Second Day in School

    Dear Kristen,

Here are the photographs of your 2nd day at school!

  • Daddy Not Home...

    Dear Kristen,

Daddy has not been home for the past few days... So what do we girls do at home for Daddy when he's away?

We cam-whore and send him photos of ourselves!

I bet it made him miss us too.

    Love,
    Mummy

  • 2nd and 3rd Day of School

    Dear Kristen,

I suspect that you enjoy school.

    5 January 2008, Monday
    Day 2 of School:

We had to wake you up! You were sound asleep in Grandma's bed and although we felt bad, we didn't want you to be late for school. You seemed excited enough about going to school. But with your new 'big girl' phase, you want to do everything yourself which costs us precious minutes. You insist that you must press the lift button. No one to help you and no one can do it for you. You insist on walking on the pavement towards the car by yourself. No holding hands. You insist on getting into the car yourself. No help from anyone, no push on your bum. You insist on walking to the school lift by yourself from the car. Very dilly-dally.

When we finally get you into the classroom and put your water bottle down on the shelf with you, you spot a boy and a teacher playing with the bead chasers and you run off, leaving Mummy and Daddy to place your schoolbag with the other schoolbags for you. Mummy goes over to say bye and a kiss for you but you ignore. Bo-hiu is the word. You're just more focused on playing with the toy and your classmate. All except a couple of parents are in the class, so we walk out and sneak glances at you from outside the door which has a window. You seemed so well adjusted. When the teacher was doing some actions you followed, you sat down right in front of the class and were very attentive. Mummy had to rush off after awhile to get some work done. But Daddy stayed and he said that you were very good and when Teacher Linda read "Spot Goes to School", which you have at home as well, you stood up and pointed at the book and blocked the whole class. You make me so proud.

Daddy followed you on the bus back and Mummy met you back at the house. You seemed so nonchalant about the whole thing. Didn't rush to give Mummy a big hug or anything. Just walked like a big girl, head held up high, and headed towards Rex to give him a pat. But when Mummy was busy praising you, I spotted a glimpse of a smile.

    6 January 2008, Tuesday
    Day 3 of School:

It was so hard to wake you up! You slept in Grandma's bed again and it was just too comfortable. When Mummy poked you a couple of times you kept saying "No... No...". Daddy succeeded in waking you up. Haha. He has the ability to be more annoying. I know.

Almost late again! Arrived at 9... or maybe even slightly after because the door was closed when we were there. There were a couple of children crying when we arrived. We noticed that no parents were in the classroom this time around. So we quickly put your waterbottle and bag down together. You stared at one of the children crying and you asked me "What's that?" I told you the name of your classmate and you told me "crying". I guess I gave the wrong answer to the question.

You spotted a book at a desk at the other side of the classroom, walked over, touched the book and never looked back. I walked over to give you a quick kiss and a hug but you barely acknowledged it. I tried to tell you that you would be taking the bus by yourself but you didn't seem to notice. We walked out of the classroom and we turned to see that you were pulling the chair up for yourself and started reading the book. Aww...

Mummy had to drive Daddy to the MRT and when I got back to school, I saw that all the parents were waiting downstairs already and no longer peering outside the classroom. I went to peek into the classroom anyway and you seemed fine. You were sitting down and listening to the teacher. So I went down to hang out with the other parents. Quite and interesting bunch... talking about property and filthy rich PRCs.

After deciding that you should be fine on the bus, I spoke to the bus-ladies that you would be sitting on the bus on your own for the first time. So I reminded them to keep an extra eye out for you. As the teachers brought you down to take the bus, I hid behind a stack of chairs to see you. You were holding the teacher's hand and holding a piece of your art-and-craft work which was a small hand on a stick. You seemed to be looking around for someone, but you didn't look too sure either. The teacher placed your handiwork into your bag and lifted you into the bus. Your classmate, Megan's mummy was on the bus, and she told me that you were fine when I peered in after you had gotten onto the bus.

When you reached home, you were totally fine! Mummy brought Cece (your dolly) out to meet you and you gave Cece and Mummy a huge hug after waving bye-bye to the bus. It is amazing how fast you've grown... Can't imagine that you have reached the point where you are able to understand what I tell you and be so independent.

In the afternoon, for a treat, I brought you to Explorer Kids at Downtown East, had lunch at Hong Kong Cafe, went for a Ferris Wheel ride and more action again at Explorer Kids. You had so much fun that even when we reached home, you refused to sleep.

And now, you're so tired finally after dinner that you're asleep by 9.30. I hope that means that you will be up early tomorrow... because tomorrow, school starts at 8.15am.

    Love,
    Mummy

  • The Beginning of So-Busy Saturdays

    Dear Kristen,

Today marks the beginning of our So-Busy Saturdays.

Every other week, we would be going for Auditory-Verbal Therapy at NUH with Auntie Joyce at 11.00am. Then we would have lunch. And in the afternoon, we would be going to Auntie Ros' for lessons with Teacher Sonia which would be from 2.00pm - 3.00pm.

Today, at AVT, Auntie Joyce asked that we followed up with the following:

    1. Read to you books and pictures, ask you questions about the books and model answers like: "Who is walking? Bear is walking. Who is eating an apple? Bear is eating an apple."
    2. Prepositions. Activity: Stick bright star/flowers all over the room and ask you to look for them. "On a table. Under the chair. In the box."
    3. Stimulate the "F" sound... Encourage you to listen to more "F" sounds like Fish, Frogs, Off.. Sing more songs like Five Little Ducks

At Ros School House, we found out that class was going to revolve around Colours for the first term. We had lots of materials... and ... Mummy is just feeling a little stressed out. Class moved at a very fast pace and I felt that it was hard for you to concentrate with everything moving so quickly. It didn't help as well that we were all seated very close to each other and you were being distracted by other people talking next to us. Hopefully next week would be better. This new teacher's command of the English language was too good either... So... we'll see how it goes. If Daddy feels the same, we'd probably sign you up for a different activity after this term is over.

At night we went over to ChoCho's house for dinner. And as usual, you kept trying to play with the stray cats. As usual as well, they would detect the hostile party and quickly run away. But one cat, for the first time laid herself down at Daddy's feet. At first you tried to hide behind Daddy, but after some encouragement, you touched the kitty!

  • First day at Riverlife Kindergarten

    Dear Kristen,

Today was pretty much a success!

You woke up on time... at around 7.30 and we managed to get dressed, and out of the house and into school by 8.45! I don't know what we'll do when school starts proper next Wednesday and begins at 8.15am! School for the first three days is just an acclimatization type of thing with just 1 hour lessons. Next Wednesday, school will be from 8.15am - 11.15am.

You were very excited and cooperative. You even tried to put on your socks yourself.

At school, you were very well behaved and seemed very at home. The moment you entered the classroom, you went over to the toys and started playing. We decided not to frighten you so we stayed in the classroom throughout but out of the direct line of your vision. Once in awhile, you would look for us, but otherwise you just continued playing. When the teacher started talking, you sat down and listened. We were so proud of you!

Only issue I have is with the school bus. It was such a long long journey back... Even though we stay pretty near, it was a half an hour bus ride back. But I guess it beats taking public transport.

Hopefully, the next week we'd be able to wait for you outside of the classroom itself.

  • New Year, New Beginnings

    Dear Kristen,

Today we spent most of our day just lazing at home. Pardon the lack of scrapbookish photographs as Mummy has just converted to Mac and is still figuring out the finer details.

Auntie Belle is currently back in the Philippines for her son's baptism and the Christmas holidays, so Grandma has been on leave to take care of you as my leave has been used up. But as it's 2009 now, I have leave again and it's my turn to keep you company at home! Anyway, today's a public holiday so everyone's at home.

We had breakfast at a HongKong cafe in Whitesands. I had the peanut butter special toast with maple syrup... Ok.. it was really quite sweet... but yummy and sinful all in one. You ended up sharing fish porridge with your Grandma & Grandpa.

(Daddy was there too but he has a ridiculous looking photo so I'm not too sure about posting it.)

We walked around Whitesands a little bit more... then headed back to Ris Grandeur for some chilling out in the house. We watched some videos... you went to take a nap... then we had dinner... and that's it.

Well, actually, most part of the day was me telling you all about school the next day! Yes! You're finally headed for school and Mummy has signed you up for Riverlife Kindergarten. Okay, so maybe school is the wrong word because it's more like a playgroup. Why we chose it because we felt that the school had a more hands-on 'project-type' of teaching method. Hopefully this does not backfire when you enter Primary 1. Plus, the school is in a church and is very spacious!

So... for the whole day (plus the days before), I've been showing you pictures of the school, the pictures of the students having fun and their happy faces. We stuck stickers of your name onto your Barney water bottle and I showed you the label with your name that I'd sewn on the inside of your school uniform. We laid out your clothes, shoes, socks, school bag and water bottle before going to sleep. I could tell that you were excited as well... Why? Well, you initially wanted to stay up and watch TV while drinking milk. But when I reminded you that you had to go school tomorrow and we would all need to wake up early, you agreed to go back to our room to drink milk and quickly sleep!

Hopefully... you would enjoy school tomorrow!

    Love,

    Mummy

PS: On second thoughts, here is Daddy's ridiculous photo:
